Why AO Smith Water Heaters Suit Metro Vancouver Homes

AO Smith builds a wide range of residential water heaters — from standard atmospheric storage tanks to high-efficiency condensing gas units and hybrid heat pump models — that map well onto the housing mix found across Metro Vancouver. Their Signature Select and ProLine XE series natural-gas storage tanks are popular in detached homes and older townhomes where a direct-vent or power-vent replacement is straightforward. For condos and newer builds where gas may not be an option, the Voltex hybrid heat pump water heater (HPWH) draws heat from surrounding air and can cut electricity consumption by up to 70 percent compared with a standard electric tank, which matters when BC Hydro rates are the alternative.

AO Smith's Optimized Performance (OP) and Signature Premier condensing gas tanks achieve first-hour delivery ratings that work well in Metro Vancouver households that have heavier hot-water demand — larger families, homes with multiple bathrooms, or suites. The brand's CoreGard magnesium anode rod, found on mid-range and premium models, provides meaningful corrosion protection given that Greater Vancouver water, while generally soft, can still attack tank linings over time. CANRO technicians are familiar with the full AO Smith residential lineup and carry common parts to service appointments, reducing the need for return visits.

  • Signature Select and ProLine XE natural-gas tanks: reliable direct-vent and power-vent options for detached homes and townhomes
  • Voltex hybrid heat pump water heater: qualifies for BC Hydro and federal Greener Homes rebates where applicable — see our rebates page for current amounts
  • Condensing ProLine XE gas series: 0.90+ UEF rating for homes where gas is the primary fuel and efficiency matters
  • CoreGard anode rod: longer service intervals between manual anode inspections, important for protecting warranty coverage
  • Wide parts availability: AO Smith maintains a strong North American parts network, so replacement elements, thermostats, and gas valves are generally stocked locally

AO Smith Water Heater Installation, Common Faults, and CANRO Service in BC

Installing any new water heater in BC requires a permit pulled through Technical Safety BC. CANRO holds gas licence LGA0043870, which authorises our Red Seal technicians to perform and sign off on natural-gas appliance work including AO Smith gas water heaters. For power-vent models, correct venting diameter and run length must match the unit's specifications — undersized PVC runs are a common error on DIY or unpermitted replacements that shorten equipment life and can void the AO Smith warranty. Electrical installations for AO Smith electric tanks or the Voltex HPWH require a dedicated 240 V circuit, and in older Metro Vancouver homes the panel capacity is worth verifying before the unit arrives.

The most common service calls CANRO sees on AO Smith water heaters include thermocouple or thermopile failure on older standing-pilot gas models, sediment-related efficiency loss on tanks that have never been flushed, failed upper or lower heating elements on electric units, and anode rod depletion leading to sulphur odour in hot water. AO Smith's electronic gas valves on newer ProLine and Signature models carry diagnostic LED codes that speed up diagnosis considerably. If your AO Smith tank is making a rumbling noise, producing discoloured water, or not recovering fast enough, those are signs the unit needs service before a more costly failure develops. Contact us through our contact page to book a same-day or after-hours diagnostic.

  • Thermocouple and thermopile replacement: common on ProLine BT series and older Signature standing-pilot models
  • Sediment flushing: AO Smith recommends annual flushing; Metro Vancouver water quality makes this practical rather than optional for tank longevity
  • Heating element and thermostat replacement: standard service on Signature electric models; CANRO carries common element sizes
  • Anode rod inspection and replacement: typically every 4-6 years depending on water quality and usage; CoreGard models extend this interval
  • Gas valve diagnostics: LED blink codes on current Signature and ProLine XE gas models allow faster fault isolation and fewer parts replaced unnecessarily
  • Pressure-relief valve testing: required by Technical Safety BC at installation and a sensible annual check on any tank regardless of brand

Frequently asked questions

Do you service A. O. Smith water heaters?
Yes—we install and repair A. O. Smith tank, heat-pump and tankless water heaters, including ProLine and Signature models.
Can you replace my tank the same day?
In many cases yes—we carry common A. O. Smith sizes and can often complete a tank swap the same day. Call (604) 359-1081.
Is the Voltex heat-pump model rebate-eligible?
Heat-pump water heaters can qualify for efficiency rebates. We confirm eligibility and handle the paperwork for you.
Does my AO Smith water heater installation in Metro Vancouver need a permit, and will it affect my warranty?
Yes. Any natural-gas water heater replacement in BC requires a permit through Technical Safety BC, and an electrical permit applies to new circuits for electric or hybrid heat pump models. AO Smith's residential warranty documentation specifies that the unit must be installed to applicable codes by a licensed contractor — an unpermitted installation gives AO Smith grounds to decline a warranty claim. CANRO holds gas licence LGA0043870 and handles the permit process as part of every installation, so you receive a signed inspection record alongside your warranty registration. If you bought an AO Smith unit elsewhere and need a licensed installation or a permit for existing work, call us at (604) 359-1081.
My AO Smith water heater is producing a rotten-egg smell from the hot water. What causes it and how is it fixed?
The sulphur or rotten-egg smell in hot water from an AO Smith tank almost always means the magnesium anode rod has reacted with bacteria in the water — particularly common when a tank has sat unused or is set below 60 degrees Celsius. The fix is to flush the tank, replace the anode rod (AO Smith's CoreGard magnesium rod on current models, or a zinc-alloy rod if the problem recurs), and briefly raise the water temperature to 60 C to pasteurise the tank interior, then return it to normal operating temperature. This is a service job rather than a replacement situation in most cases. CANRO carries anode rods compatible with the AO Smith Signature and ProLine tank families and can usually complete the service same-day.
