First, the honest status update
A lot of websites still advertise “up to $5,000 from the Canada Greener Homes Grant.” That grant stopped taking new applications in early 2024. We would rather tell you the truth than send you chasing a closed program. The good news is that real federal money is still on the table — it just comes in a different form now, and it pairs extremely well with BC’s provincial rebates.
The three federal pieces that matter today
1. Canada Greener Homes Loan — interest-free, up to $40,000
This is the workhorse for most homeowners now. It is a 10-year, interest-free loan of up to $40,000 for eligible retrofits, including heat pumps. Used well, it lets you convert to a heat pump with little or no upfront cash, then repay gradually while your monthly energy costs fall. It is not free money like a rebate — but interest-free financing on a $20,000 project is worth thousands.
2. Oil to Heat Pump Affordability (OHPA) — for oil-heated homes
If your home still runs on heating oil, this is the headline program. Lower- and median-income oil-heated households switching to a heat pump have been eligible for a grant historically worth up to roughly $10,000–$15,000 once the provincial co-delivery top-up is included. Relatively few Metro Vancouver homes are still on oil — but if yours is, call us first, because the economics are exceptional.
3. The provincial stack (CleanBC + utilities)
Federal programs are designed to be combined with BC’s. In a normal Vancouver heat-pump conversion, the CleanBC Better Homes rebate provides money you never repay, and the federal loan covers the remaining upfront cost interest-free. That combination is what makes going electric genuinely affordable here.

What CANRO does (and does not) do
We are your installer, not the federal program office. You apply through the Government of Canada portals. Is the Canada Greener Homes Grant still available in 2026?+
No — the original Canada Greener Homes Grant (up to $5,000 plus $600 toward the EnerGuide evaluation) stopped accepting new applications in early 2024. If you were already enrolled before then, you may still be able to complete your project under the grant. For everyone else, the federal support has shifted to the interest-free Canada Greener Homes Loan and, for oil-heated homes, the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability program. CANRO helps you pursue whatever federal and BC programs are currently open.
What is the Canada Greener Homes Loan?+
It is an interest-free federal loan of up to $40,000 over 10 years to fund eligible energy-efficiency retrofits — including heat pumps. Because it is interest-free, many Metro Vancouver homeowners use it to bridge the upfront cost of a heat-pump conversion and then repay it over time while their energy bills drop. It is separate from, and can be combined with, BC’s CleanBC rebates.
What is the Oil to Heat Pump Affordability (OHPA) program?+
OHPA is a federal program for households that currently heat with heating oil and switch to an electric heat pump. Eligible lower- and median-income households can receive a large grant — historically up to about $10,000 to $15,000 when combined with the provincial co-delivery top-up. If you are on oil, this is usually the single most valuable program to ask about.
Can I combine federal programs with CleanBC and utility rebates?+
Yes. The federal loan/OHPA and the provincial CleanBC, BC Hydro and FortisBC rebates are designed to be stacked. A typical Metro Vancouver heat-pump conversion combines a CleanBC rebate (money you don’t repay) with the interest-free federal loan (to cover the rest of the upfront cost). CANRO maps out the full stack for your specific situation.
Do I need an EnerGuide home evaluation?+
For the federal loan and some measures, a pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation by a registered energy advisor has generally been required. For most CleanBC heat-pump rebates it is not. Requirements change as programs evolve — we will tell you whether an evaluation is needed for the specific programs you are using before you book one.
How do I apply for federal home-energy programs?+
Federal programs are applied for through the Government of Canada / Natural Resources Canada portals, not through CANRO — we are your installer, not the program administrator. What we do is make sure your equipment and installation qualify, provide the invoices and documentation you need, and coordinate with the provincial rebates so the whole package lines up.
