Do Heat Pumps Work in BC Winters? Cold-Climate Heat Pumps Explained

Yes - modern cold-climate heat pumps heat reliably through Metro Vancouver winters. Here is how, and what to look for.

By the CANRO Heating & Cooling technical team · Licensed HVAC & gas-fitting contractor, Metro Vancouver · Last updated May 2026

⚡ Quick answer

Modern cold-climate heat pumps hold strong heating capacity well below freezing, and Metro Vancouver has one of the mildest winter climates in Canada. For the vast majority of homes here, a properly sized cold-climate heat pump heats the home on its own all winter - no gas required. Call (604) 359-1081 to find the right one for your home.

The old myth, and why it is outdated

Years ago, heat pumps lost much of their capacity in the cold, so people assumed they could not handle Canadian winters. That is no longer true. Cold-climate heat pumps use variable-speed inverter compressors and improved refrigerants to deliver strong, efficient heat far below freezing - and our coastal winters rarely test those limits.

Why Metro Vancouver is nearly ideal

We have one of the mildest winter climates in the country - long stretches above freezing and only occasional cold snaps. That is squarely in a cold-climate heat pump's comfort zone. The North Shore and higher-elevation neighbourhoods see more cold and snow, so we size a touch more conservatively there, but the technology handles it.

  • Strong heating output well below 0°C with cold-climate models
  • Efficient operation that usually beats baseboards on running cost
  • Reliable performance through our typical wet, mild winters
  • Optional electric or gas backup (dual-fuel) for the rare extreme snap or for peace of mind

What to look for and how we size it

Not all heat pumps are equal - cold-climate performance ratings, low-temperature capacity, and correct sizing all matter. We do a heat-loss calculation for your home, check your ductwork and electrical panel, and recommend a unit rated for our conditions. Oversizing or undersizing both hurt comfort and efficiency, which is why we measure rather than guess.

Frequently asked questions

Will a heat pump keep my home warm on the coldest BC days?+
For the vast majority of Metro Vancouver homes, yes - a properly sized cold-climate heat pump heats on its own all winter. For the rare extreme cold snap, or for total peace of mind, a dual-fuel setup adds gas backup, and electric backup is also an option.
Do heat pumps lose efficiency in the cold?+
Efficiency does decline as it gets colder, but cold-climate models retain strong, useful heating capacity well below freezing - and our mild winters rarely push them hard. Over a full season here, a heat pump is typically very efficient.
What about the North Shore or higher elevations?+
Those areas see more cold and snow, so we size a little more conservatively and may recommend a higher-capacity cold-climate model or backup heat. The technology handles it well; correct sizing is the key.
Do I need a gas backup?+
Usually not for comfort - a properly sized heat pump stands on its own here. Some homeowners keep their gas furnace as dual-fuel backup for the coldest days or for resilience. We will give you the honest recommendation for your home.

Frequently asked questions

Is a heat pump worth it in Vancouver?
Yes. Vancouver's mild winters (average lows above -5°C) are ideal for cold-climate heat pumps. A properly sized modern heat pump can cover 100% of heating and cooling for most homes, cut heating bills by 30–60% versus electric baseboards or oil, and qualifies for combined BC Hydro, FortisBC and federal rebates.
What rebates are available for heat pumps in BC?
Review current Better Homes BC and utility program requirements for your property and equipment before installation. Amounts, application steps and permitted combinations vary. The Canada Greener Homes Grant and Loan are closed to new applications; previously approved applicants should follow their own file requirements.
Should I get a ducted heat pump or ductless mini-split?
If you already have ductwork from a furnace, a ducted central heat pump is usually the better choice for whole-home comfort. Ductless mini-splits are ideal for additions, suites, garage conversions, and homes without ducts (radiant heated houses).
How long does a heat pump last?
A modern heat pump installed by a qualified contractor typically lasts 15–20 years. Annual maintenance, regular filter changes and keeping the outdoor coil clear of leaves and debris all extend service life.
Do heat pumps work in cold weather?
Modern cold-climate heat pumps from Mitsubishi, Daikin, Carrier, Lennox and Bosch maintain rated capacity down to -15°C and continue producing heat (at reduced capacity) down to -25°C — far colder than Metro Vancouver ever gets.
What HVAC services does CANRO offer in Metro Vancouver?

Cold-climate heat pumps explained
A cold-climate heat pump uses an enhanced compressor (often variable-speed) and refrigerant system engineered to keep extracting heat from outdoor air down to -25°C or lower, unlike standard heat pumps that lose efficiency below freezing. In Metro Vancouver's mild winters they typically cover 90-100% of heating needs without a backup furnace, cutting gas use while still providing summer AC. Installed cost runs $6,000-$18,000+ depending on home size and ductwork, with savings supported through the interest-free Canada Greener Homes Loan, CleanBC, BC Hydro, and FortisBC programs.
