Yes — a heat pump is an AC in summer

In cooling mode, a heat pump uses the identical refrigeration cycle as an air conditioner to remove heat and humidity from your home. There is no compromise on summer comfort — a properly sized heat pump cools as well as a comparable AC.

The bonus: it also heats and earns rebates

The only real difference from an AC is that the heat pump can run in reverse to heat efficiently in winter — which is why it qualifies for rebates a cooling-only AC does not. You get equal cooling plus winter savings and incentives.

Rebates & financing

A heat pump both cools and heats, so it qualifies for the major programs. Depending on your home, fuel source and the equipment chosen, that can include CleanBC Better Homes, BC Hydro, FortisBC and the federal Canada Greener Homes incentives, plus the interest-free Greener Homes Loan (up to $40,000). Combined incentives frequently offset several thousand dollars.

CANRO confirms exactly what you qualify for and handles the paperwork. Prefer to spread the cost? We offer flexible financing so you can cool your home now and pay over time. See current rebates & financing →

Why hire a licensed technician

Modern cooling equipment is sealed, pressurized and wired to be serviced by trained professionals — not opened up at home. Refrigerant is handled only by technicians certified to do so; releasing it is unsafe and illegal, and an incorrect charge will quietly wreck efficiency and shorten the compressor’s life. Capacitors hold a dangerous charge even with the power off, and a wiring or breaker mistake on your home cooling is a real shock and fire risk. A licensed CANRO technician diagnoses the true root cause, repairs it to code, keeps your manufacturer warranty intact, and leaves the system safe — the first time. If a part is dangerous or sized wrong, we tell you honestly.

Frequently asked questions

Do heat pumps cool as well as air conditioners?

Yes — in cooling mode the technology is identical. A correctly sized heat pump cools just as well as a comparable AC.

Will a heat pump struggle in a heat wave?

No, when properly sized — inverter heat pumps hold steady cooling through BC heat events. Sizing is the key, which is why we run a load calculation.

Why choose a heat pump over an AC then?

Equal cooling, plus efficient winter heating and rebates — so for most BC homes the lifetime value is clearly better.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Is a heat pump worth it in Vancouver?
Yes. Vancouver's mild winters (average lows above -5°C) are ideal for cold-climate heat pumps. A properly sized modern heat pump can cover 100% of heating and cooling for most homes, cut heating bills by 30–60% versus electric baseboards or oil, and qualifies for combined BC Hydro, FortisBC and federal rebates.
What rebates are available for heat pumps in BC?
Review current Better Homes BC and utility program requirements for your property and equipment before installation. Amounts, application steps and permitted combinations vary. The Canada Greener Homes Grant and Loan are closed to new applications; previously approved applicants should follow their own file requirements.
Should I get a ducted heat pump or ductless mini-split?
If you already have ductwork from a furnace, a ducted central heat pump is usually the better choice for whole-home comfort. Ductless mini-splits are ideal for additions, suites, garage conversions, and homes without ducts (radiant heated houses).
How long does a heat pump last?
A modern heat pump installed by a qualified contractor typically lasts 15–20 years. Annual maintenance, regular filter changes and keeping the outdoor coil clear of leaves and debris all extend service life.
Do heat pumps work in cold weather?
Modern cold-climate heat pumps from Mitsubishi, Daikin, Carrier, Lennox and Bosch maintain rated capacity down to -15°C and continue producing heat (at reduced capacity) down to -25°C — far colder than Metro Vancouver ever gets.
What HVAC services does CANRO offer in Metro Vancouver?
CANRO installs, services and repairs boilers, furnaces, heat pumps, hot water tanks, tankless water heaters, gas fireplaces and air conditioning across Metro Vancouver. We work on residential homes, townhouses and condos throughout the Lower Mainland.
How long has CANRO been in business?
CANRO has been serving the Greater Vancouver area since 1999. Our founder George is recognised by customers as one of the most experienced boiler and hydronic heating technicians in the Lower Mainland.
What areas do you serve?
We cover all of Metro Vancouver: Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, Surrey, Coquitlam, North Vancouver, West Vancouver, New Westminster, Delta, Langley, Port Moody, Port Coquitlam, White Rock, Pitt Meadows, and Maple Ridge.
How do heat pumps work during winter?
In winter, a heat pump reverses its refrigeration cycle to pull latent heat from outdoor air, even down to roughly -15C to -25C depending on the model, and moves it indoors through a compressor and refrigerant loop, releasing it via the indoor coil. As outdoor temperatures drop, capacity and efficiency decline, so many Metro Vancouver homes pair a heat pump with a furnace or electric backup for the coldest days. Cold-climate models with enhanced vapor injection compressors handle our region's winters well. CANRO's Red Seal technicians can assess your home and recommend the right cold-climate system and backup setup. Call (604) 359-1081 for a same-day response.
