Gree is one of the largest heat pump manufacturers in the world, and several of its ductless lines — the Sapphire, Livo, and Vireo — are a practical fit for Metro Vancouver's mild but damp winters. The Sapphire in particular is rated for heating operation down to roughly -30 °C, well past anything the Lower Mainland typically sees, which means it holds output during the handful of cold snaps that push temperatures below zero in Burnaby, Surrey, or Coquitlam. Like any ductless system operating year-round in Metro Vancouver's humidity, Gree units develop predictable service patterns. The most frequent call we receive on Gree heat pumps is a refrigerant leak at the flare connection on the indoor unit. This is not unique to Gree, but improperly flared line-sets — common when units are installed without proper torque specs — allow slow refrigerant loss that shows up one or two seasons later as reduced heating capacity and eventually an error code. Our technicians pressure-test, locate, and re-flare or replace the affected section before recharging to manufacturer spec.
A second common fault on older Gree Livo and Vireo units is drain pan overflow in heating mode. During defrost cycles, condensate that should drain away freezes or backs up if the condensate line is undersized or pitched incorrectly — a real concern in the sub-zero snaps that hit areas like Abbotsford and Mission. We clear the drain, verify pitch, and where needed add low-voltage heat trace to the exterior line.
