HVAC Warranties Explained: What Protects Your Investment

HVAC Warranties Explained: What Protects Your Investment

New HVAC equipment comes with two kinds of protection - the manufacturer's parts warranty and the installer's workmanship warranty. Here is how each works and what keeps them valid.

By the CANRO Heating & Cooling technical team · Licensed HVAC & gas-fitting contractor, Metro Vancouver · Last updated May 2026

⚡ Quick answer

Your new HVAC system is protected by two warranties: the manufacturer's parts warranty (commonly 5 to 10 years, and often extendable to 10-12 years when the unit is registered) and the installer's workmanship warranty on the labour. CANRO installs to manufacturer spec, registers your equipment, and stands behind our work. Call (604) 359-1081 for current terms.

The two warranties on every install

1. The manufacturer's parts warranty

This covers the equipment itself - the heat exchanger, compressor, coils, control boards and other components - against defects. Coverage commonly runs 5 to 10 years and, on many brands, extends to 10 or even 12 years when the unit is registered shortly after installation. The exact term depends on the brand and model.

2. The workmanship (labour) warranty

This covers the quality of the installation itself - that the system was sized, vented, wired and commissioned correctly. A manufacturer warranty replaces a faulty part, but only a proper installation prevents the problems in the first place. We stand behind our workmanship; ask us for the current labour-warranty terms when we quote your project.

Why registration matters - and why we handle it

Most homeowners never see the bigger warranty they paid for, simply because the equipment was never registered. Manufacturers typically require registration within a set window (often 60 to 90 days) to unlock the extended term - skip it and you may drop from 10 years of coverage to the base 5. We register your equipment for you as part of the install, so you get the full coverage you are entitled to.

Keep your paperwork
We give you the model and serial numbers, the registration confirmation and your invoice. Keep them together - a warranty claim goes far more smoothly when the details are on hand. Lost yours? We keep records of our installs and can help.

What can void a warranty (and how to avoid it)

Warranties are not unconditional. The most common ways homeowners lose coverage are avoidable:

  • No annual maintenance - many manufacturers require documented yearly servicing to honour the warranty
  • Installation by an unlicensed contractor, or without the required permit and inspection
  • Improper sizing or venting that runs the equipment outside its design conditions
  • Failing to register the unit in the required window
  • Using non-approved parts in a repair

Every one of these is prevented by a licensed, permitted, properly-documented install with regular maintenance - which is exactly how we work.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the warranty on a new furnace or heat pump?+
The manufacturer's parts warranty is commonly 5 to 10 years and often extends to 10-12 years when the unit is registered after installation. The exact term depends on the brand and model. We register your equipment so you get the full coverage, and we explain the workmanship warranty on the labour when we quote.
Do I have to register my HVAC equipment myself?+
No - we handle registration for you as part of the installation, within the manufacturer's required window. This is important: skipping registration can cut your coverage roughly in half. We give you the confirmation and paperwork for your records.
Does skipping annual maintenance really void my warranty?+
It can. Many manufacturers require documented annual servicing to honour the warranty, and neglected maintenance is a common reason claims are denied. Beyond the warranty, regular maintenance genuinely extends equipment life - it is worth it on both counts.
What is the difference between a parts warranty and a workmanship warranty?+
The parts warranty (from the manufacturer) replaces defective components. The workmanship warranty (from the installer) covers that the system was installed correctly - sized, vented, wired and commissioned to spec. You want both, because a great unit installed poorly still causes problems.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need air conditioning in Vancouver?
Vancouver summers have been getting hotter — the 2021 heat dome saw temperatures over 40°C. Most modern Vancouver homes now install a heat pump that provides both heating and cooling, replacing a furnace and avoiding the need for a separate A/C system.
How much does central A/C cost in Vancouver?
A typical 2.5–3 ton central air conditioner added to an existing forced-air furnace costs $5,500–$9,500 installed. A heat pump conversion (cooling + heating in one unit) is usually a smarter long-term investment given available rebates.
How often should A/C be serviced?
Annual servicing in spring keeps the outdoor coil clean, refrigerant charge correct, and the indoor evaporator coil and condensate drain clear. Skipping service is the single biggest cause of premature compressor failure.
