Heat Pump Installation · Metro Vancouver

How long does heat pump installation take?

Most heat pump installations take 1–3 days. A single-zone ductless mini-split is often done in a day; a multi-zone ductless or a ducted central heat pump typically takes 2–3 days, and a little longer if an electrical panel upgrade or duct work is involved. We confirm the timeline at the quote.

What the timeline depends on

  • System type: single ductless head (~1 day) vs multi-zone or ducted central (2–3 days).
  • Electrical: a panel upgrade or new circuit adds time and is coordinated with the install.
  • Ductwork: reusing sound ducts is quick; modifications add a day.
  • Removal: taking out an old furnace/AC if you’re fully switching.

What to expect

We mount the outdoor unit and indoor head(s) or air handler, run the refrigerant lines and electrical, evacuate and charge the system, commission it for both heating and cooling, and handle permits and rebate paperwork. See heat pump installation.

What Happens on Installation Day: A Step-by-Step Overview

Before our crew arrives, we confirm the electrical panel has been inspected and that the designated outdoor pad or wall-mount location is clear. For a standard ductless mini-split in a Metro Vancouver condo or townhome, the sequence typically unfolds in four stages across the same day: mounting the indoor air handler, setting the outdoor condenser unit, running the refrigerant line set and condensate drain through the exterior wall, and completing the electrical connection to the dedicated circuit.

  1. Morning (1-2 hrs): Indoor unit bracket installed; wall sleeve core-drilled and sleeved to BC Building Code clearance.
  2. Mid-morning (1-2 hrs): Outdoor condenser positioned on anti-vibration pad or brackets; line set routed and insulated.
  3. Midday (1 hr): Refrigerant lines pressure-tested and vacuumed down to manufacturer spec before charging.
  4. Afternoon (1-2 hrs): Electrical final, thermostat or remote commissioning, and system test run in both heating and cooling modes.
  5. Sign-off (30 min): We walk you through filter access, operating the remote, and what normal startup sounds to expect.

Older Metro Vancouver homes with stucco exteriors or 2x6 walls from post-1992 construction can add 30-45 minutes to the sleeve-and-seal step, because proper weatherproofing around the line-set penetration is essential in our wet coastal climate. We never leave a wall penetration with spray foam alone; a proper exterior flashing boot and silicone bead are standard on every CANRO install.

BC Rebates and Permit Sign-Off: What Adds Time After the Crew Leaves

The physical install is only part of the timeline. In BC, any new heat pump installation requires a Technical Safety BC electrical permit, and if the work touches a gas line (for a hybrid heat pump paired with a gas furnace), a separate gas permit under our LGA0043870 licence is also pulled. The electrical inspection is typically scheduled within 3-10 business days of completion; you do not need to be home for it, but the panel must remain accessible. We handle permit applications before the install date so inspection is never the bottleneck.

  • CleanBC Better Homes rebate: Applications open the day after install; processing takes 6-10 weeks but does not delay equipment use.
  • FortisBC rebate (ducted systems): Requires the Technical Safety BC inspection certificate, so budget 2-3 weeks after inspection for the full paperwork chain.
  • Federal Greener Homes Grant: Requires a pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation; schedule the post-evaluation within 6 months of install.
  • BC Hydro incentives: Available for qualifying cold-climate heat pumps; CANRO confirms eligibility at the quoting stage so there are no surprises.

We prepare and submit all rebate documentation on your behalf as part of the installation package. If you want a full breakdown of current incentive amounts before you commit, our rebates page lists the current FortisBC, CleanBC, and federal figures. Rebate stacking is common in Metro Vancouver and can reduce your net cost by $3,000-$6,500 depending on the system type and your existing heating fuel.

Rebates & financing

High-efficiency and electrification upgrades can qualify for CleanBC, BC Hydro, FortisBC and federal Greener Homes rebates—sometimes several thousand dollars. CANRO is a registered contractor and we handle the paperwork. See our rebates & financing page, and ask about interest-free options on qualifying upgrades.

More frequently asked questions

Can a heat pump be installed in one day?
A single-zone ductless mini-split often can. Ducted central or multi-zone systems usually take 2–3 days, more if electrical upgrades are needed.
Will I have heating/cooling the same day?
For single-zone installs, usually yes. For larger systems we commission before leaving so you’re comfortable as soon as the work is complete.
Does an electrical upgrade add time?
It can — if your panel needs upgrading we schedule it with the install; we assess this at the quote so there are no surprises.
Do you handle permits and rebates in that time?
Yes — we pull permits, coordinate inspection, and submit the rebate paperwork as part of the project.
Do I need to be home for the entire heat pump installation, or just at the start and end?
You need to be present at the start to provide site access and at the end to receive the system walkthrough — typically the first 15 minutes and last 30 minutes of the day. During the install itself you do not need to supervise. However, one adult must remain reachable by phone in case we discover an unexpected panel or structural issue. For condos in Metro Vancouver, strata approval and elevator booking are your responsibility before the crew arrives, and that coordination should happen at least one week in advance.
Will my heat pump installation disrupt my heating or hot water for the whole day?
For a standalone ductless mini-split, your existing heating source (furnace, baseboard, hot water radiators) is unaffected and stays on the whole time. If you are replacing a gas furnace with a hybrid heat pump system, the furnace is offline for 4-6 hours during the changeover. We schedule hybrid installs for mild-weather days where possible, and we always restore heat before leaving the site. Hot water is unaffected unless we are also replacing a combi-boiler, which is a separate scope. See our heat pump services page for system-specific details.
