Compatibility - will it work with your system?

Google Nest is a low-voltage (24V) thermostat. It is excellent on gas furnaces, central AC, heat pumps and dual-fuel systems. It does NOT control electric baseboard or in-floor heating - those need a line-voltage Mysa instead. The Nest Learning Thermostat runs without a C-wire on many systems by power-sharing, but a C-wire is the most reliable setup and the budget Nest Thermostat more often needs one.

Will a smart thermostat work in my home? The C-wire question

The single most common reason a do-it-yourself smart thermostat install fails in Metro Vancouver is the missing C-wire (common wire). Smart thermostats need a small, steady supply of 24-volt power to run their screen and Wi-Fi, and that power traditionally comes from a dedicated common wire back to the furnace or air-handler board.

Many homes here were wired long before smart thermostats existed, so the bundle of wires at the wall has only four or five conductors and no spare for a C. When a smart thermostat is installed without proper power it can boot-loop, drop Wi-Fi, fail to call for heat, or even short-cycle the furnace.

• Run or repurpose a C-wire from the furnace control board - the cleanest, most reliable fix when the cable run allows it
• Add a manufacturer power kit - ecobee includes a Power Extender Kit (PEK), and add-a-wire adapters work on many systems
• Choose a C-wire-flexible model - several Emerson Sensi and Nest setups run without a dedicated common wire on common system types
• For electric baseboard there is no C-wire at all - those run on line voltage and need a Mysa-style line-voltage thermostat instead of a Nest or ecobee
