No Hot Water? Water Heater Troubleshooting Guide

The common causes of no hot water from your water heater, the safe checks you can do yourself, and when to call a licensed technician.

By the CANRO Heating & Cooling technical team · Licensed HVAC & gas-fitting contractor, Metro Vancouver · Last updated May 2026

⚡ Quick answer

No hot water is usually a pilot or ignition issue on a gas tank, a tripped breaker or failed element on an electric tank, a tripped thermostat or gas-supply problem, or a fault code on a tankless unit. A few checks are safe; gas, electrical and tankless faults need a licensed technician. Call (604) 359-1081 and we will diagnose it properly.

Why your water heater may not be working

Below are the most common reasons for no hot water from your water heater, what each one means, and which you can safely check yourself before calling a technician.

Likely causeWhat it means
Gas tank: pilot/ignition outThe pilot or igniter has failed, so the burner will not light
Electric tank: tripped breaker or elementA tripped breaker or a burned-out heating element leaves the tank cold
Tripped high-limit / thermostatA safety reset or failed thermostat has cut the heat
Tankless fault codeA tankless unit has locked out on an error - often venting, gas or scale-related
Gas supply issueNo gas to a gas water heater
Leaking or failed tankA failed tank may not hold or heat water and needs replacement

What you can safely check yourself

Before you call, these simple checks are safe for any homeowner and sometimes solve the problem:

  • For electric units, check the breaker and reset if needed (once)
  • For gas units, check whether the pilot is lit (per your manual) and the gas is on
  • Look for an error code on a tankless unit and note it
  • Confirm the temperature setting has not been turned down
  • Check for leaks or water around the base of the tank
  • Confirm other gas appliances work (gas-supply check)

When to call CANRO

If the safe checks above do not restore normal operation, it is time for a licensed technician. We diagnose the real cause of no hot water from your water heater, quote a firm price before any repair, and fix it properly - we have served Metro Vancouver since 1999.

A safety note
A leaking tank usually means the tank has failed - shut off the water supply to it and call us. If you smell gas, leave and call the FortisBC emergency line and 911. Repeatedly resetting a tripped breaker or limit is a warning sign, not a fix.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I suddenly have no hot water?+
On a gas tank, the pilot or igniter has often failed; on an electric tank, a tripped breaker or a burned-out element is common; a tankless unit may have locked out on a fault code. Note any error code and call us - we can usually restore hot water quickly.
My water heater is leaking - is it an emergency?+
A leaking tank usually means the tank itself has failed and will not recover. Shut off the water supply to the tank and call us; we offer fast replacement across Metro Vancouver so you are not without hot water for long.
Why is my tankless unit showing an error code?+
Tankless error codes point to specific issues - venting, gas supply, ignition, or scale buildup from our moderately hard water. Note the code and call us; many are quick fixes, and an annual descale prevents the scale-related ones.
Can I relight the pilot myself?+
On many gas tanks you can, following the instructions on the unit. If it will not stay lit, the thermocouple or gas valve may be failing - and that needs a licensed technician. If you smell gas, do not attempt it; leave and call for help.
