Do Air Purifiers Help With Wildfire Smoke Indoors?

A properly sized HEPA air purifier can meaningfully reduce wildfire smoke particles indoors, but it works best alongside good furnace filtration and a sealed-up home.

Quick answer: Yes, a good air purifier helps a lot with wildfire smoke indoors, but only if it uses a true HEPA filter (and ideally activated carbon for the smoky smell) and is sized correctly for the room. A cheap or undersized unit, or one without HEPA filtration, will do very little against fine wildfire smoke particles.

Why wildfire smoke is hard on indoor air

Wildfire smoke is made up mostly of very fine particulate matter (PM2.5) small enough to get deep into your lungs and to slip through gaps around windows, doors, and vents. During smoke events in Metro Vancouver, outdoor air quality can drop fast, and that same fine particulate works its way indoors even in a fairly well-sealed house. A regular furnace filter alone usually isn't fine enough to catch most of it, which is where a dedicated air purifier can help.

What actually works

  • True HEPA filtration: look for a unit that specifies true HEPA, not just "HEPA-type" or "HEPA-like," since only true HEPA filters are tested to capture the very fine particles found in smoke.
  • Activated carbon layer: HEPA filters trap particles but don't remove odour or gases, so a carbon layer helps with the smoky smell that HEPA alone won't fully address.
  • Correct sizing (CADR): a purifier needs a high enough Clean Air Delivery Rate for the square footage of the room it's in — an undersized unit running at max speed in a room too large for it will still leave smoke particles behind.
  • Placement: put the purifier in the room you spend the most time in (bedroom, living room) rather than expecting one small unit to clean an entire house.

Pairing a purifier with your HVAC system

Standalone room purifiers and your home's HVAC system solve different parts of the problem. During a smoke event, it also helps to upgrade your furnace or heat pump filter to the highest MERV rating your system can handle without restricting airflow, run the system fan on recirculate rather than pulling in outdoor air, and keep windows and doors closed. If you're not sure what MERV rating your equipment can safely handle, or you want a whole-home solution like a high-efficiency filtration upgrade or an HRV/ERV, that's something we can assess during a service visit — running too high a MERV filter on a system that isn't designed for it can restrict airflow and stress the blower motor.

When to call a professional

If your home consistently feels smoky indoors during wildfire season despite closed windows and a room purifier, it's worth having your ductwork and filtration checked for leaks or an undersized filter setup. CANRO can do a diagnostic visit and give you a free written quote for any filtration or sealing upgrades that make sense for your specific home.

Frequently asked questions

Do ionizers or ozone generators help with wildfire smoke?
We don't recommend ozone-generating devices for indoor air — ozone itself is a lung irritant. Stick with true HEPA plus activated carbon filtration instead.
Can I just run my furnace fan instead of buying a purifier?
Running the furnace fan with a good filter helps circulate and filter whole-home air, but most standard furnace filters aren't as fine as a dedicated HEPA purifier. The two work well together rather than as a substitute for each other.
How long should I run an air purifier during a smoke event?
Continuously for as long as the outdoor air quality is poor. Most HEPA purifiers are designed for continuous operation and will keep cycling the room's air the whole time.
Will a purifier remove the smoky smell completely?
A HEPA filter alone won't fully remove odour since smell comes from gases, not particles. Look for a unit with an activated carbon stage if the smell is a major concern.
Does closing windows fully during a smoke event actually help?
Yes — keeping windows and doors closed, along with sealing obvious gaps, significantly reduces how much outdoor smoke gets pulled indoors, especially when combined with recirculating HVAC air rather than pulling in fresh outdoor air.
