Gas Fireplace Not Turning On – Fix in Greater Vancouver A gas fireplace is one of the most convenient and efficient ways to heat your home, especially during the cold winters in Greater Vancouver. Unlike traditional wood-burning fireplaces, gas fireplaces provide consistent heat, are easy to operate, and require minimal maintenance. However, like any home appliance, gas fireplaces can sometimes fail to turn on, leaving homeowners frustrated and searching for a solution. If your gas fireplace is not turning on, there are several potential causes, including issues with the pilot light, thermocouple, thermopile, gas supply, or electrical connections. Fortunately, CANRO Heating & Cooling specializes in gas fireplace repair services across Greater Vancouver, including Vancouver,
Burnaby,
Richmond,
Coquitlam,
Surrey, Langley, and surrounding areas. Our experienced technicians can diagnose and fix your fireplace quickly, ensuring that you and your family stay warm and comfortable.
Common Reasons Your Gas Fireplace Won’t Turn On
There are many reasons why a gas fireplace might not start. Below, we break down the most common causes and how they can be fixed.
1. Pilot Light Issues
The pilot light is a small, continuously burning flame that ignites the main burner when you turn on your gas fireplace. If your gas fireplace isn’t turning on, the pilot light may have gone out. This can happen due to a strong draft, dirt or debris in the pilot assembly, or a faulty thermocouple.
How to Fix:- Check if the pilot light is lit. If not, try relighting it by following the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Ensure the gas valve is open. If it’s closed, turn it to the “ON” position.
- If the pilot light won’t stay lit, the thermocouple or thermopile may be faulty and need replacement.
2. Faulty Thermocouple
The thermocouple is a safety device that detects whether the pilot light is on. If it fails, it can prevent the gas valve from opening, meaning the fireplace won’t turn on.
How to Fix:- Check for dirt or soot buildup on the thermocouple and clean it with a soft brush.
- Ensure the thermocouple is properly aligned with the pilot flame.
- If cleaning doesn’t work, the thermocouple may need replacement.
3. Malfunctioning Thermopile
The thermopile is another safety component that generates the necessary electrical voltage to open the gas valve. Over time, thermopiles can wear out, preventing the fireplace from igniting.
How to Fix:- Use a multimeter to check the voltage output. If the reading is below the required level, the thermopile needs to be replaced.
- Make sure the thermopile is free from dust or debris.
4. Gas Supply Problems
If there’s an issue with your home’s gas supply, your fireplace won’t turn on. This could be due to a closed gas valve, a gas leak, or low gas pressure.
How to Fix:- Ensure the gas shut-off valve is fully open.
- Check if other gas appliances in your home (like the stove or furnace) are working. If they aren’t, contact your gas provider.
- If you smell gas, turn off the main gas supply immediately and call a professional for inspection.
5. Electrical Problems
Even though gas fireplaces use gas to produce heat, they rely on electricity for ignition and operation. Issues with the wiring, wall switch, or remote control can prevent the fireplace from turning on.
How to Fix:- Check the circuit breaker and make sure power is reaching the fireplace.
- If your fireplace has a wall switch, ensure it’s functioning correctly.
- If you use a remote control, replace the batteries.

- Check for Gas Leaks – If you smell gas, turn off your fireplace immediately and call a professional.

Expert insights: gas fireplaces in Metro Vancouver
Here is how gas fireplaces work in the context of Metro Vancouver's climate, codes and homes. Modern direct-vent gas fireplaces in Metro Vancouver provide 20,000-40,000 BTU of supplemental heat at 65-85% efficiency. Sealed combustion means no makeup air is drawn from inside the home, preserving indoor air quality.
Heat-pump rebates from BC Hydro, FortisBC and the federal Greener Homes program stack to as much as $11,000+ for eligible Metro Vancouver households, dramatically changing the install-cost math vs. a conventional system. CANRO has worked with gas fireplace systems across Metro Vancouver since 1999, including installations and service calls in Deep Cove, Edmonds, Whalley and Point Grey.
Technical considerations for gas fireplaces in Metro Vancouver
Sizing. Fireplace sizing depends on room size and intended use (ambience vs supplemental heat). For zone heating a 200-400 sq ft room, 25,000-35,000 BTU is typical.
Lifespan. A well-maintained gas fireplace lasts 20-30 years. Annual service — pilot-system cleaning, glass replacement check, and blower-motor lubrication — extends life and prevents pilot-light failures.
Warning signs. Fireplace issues include pilot-light failures (thermocouple wear), blower-motor noise or failure, glass clouding (incomplete combustion), and remote-control battery drain.
What CANRO checks during a gas fireplace service
- Pilot system clean and thermocouple/thermopile test
- Burner port clean
- Glass front gasket inspection
- Blower motor lubrication and amp draw
- Remote/wall switch operation
- Combustion analysis and CO test
- Logs and embers placement check

Gas fireplace FAQs
My gas fireplace pilot won't stay lit — what's wrong?
Pilot light failures are almost always due to a worn thermocouple or thermopile (the small probe that detects the flame), a dusty pilot-light orifice, a weak pilot flame due to low gas pressure, or a failed gas-valve safety circuit. All are quick repairs.
Do gas fireplaces need annual servicing?
Yes. Annual servicing keeps the pilot system clean, the burner ports clear, the glass front sealed, and the blower motor lubricated. It also includes a combustion safety check and carbon-monoxide test.
How much does it cost to install a gas fireplace in Metro Vancouver?
A typical new gas-fireplace install in Metro Vancouver costs $4,500-$9,500 depending on the unit, venting requirements, gas-line work, and any wall framing or finishing required. Direct-vent units with a horizontal exterior wall vent cost less than B-vent units requiring a vertical chimney.
Can I convert my wood fireplace to gas?
Yes. Gas fireplace inserts drop into existing wood fireplace openings, requiring only a gas-line extension and a stainless vent liner up the existing chimney. CANRO installs Valor, Montigo, Mendota and other major brands in Metro Vancouver.
How long does a gas fireplace last?
A well-maintained gas fireplace lasts 20-30 years. Major components (gas valve, blower motor, thermocouple) may need replacement at 8-15 years; the burner and heat exchanger typically last the life of the unit.
Are gas fireplaces efficient enough to actually heat a room?
Modern direct-vent gas fireplaces with sealed combustion run at 65-85% efficiency and provide 20,000-40,000 BTU — enough to heat a 200-500 sq ft room comfortably. They're ideal for zone heating in homes with cold rooms or for backup heat during power outages (some models include manual ignition that runs without electricity).
