For most Metro Vancouver homes, indoor relative humidity between 30% and 40% in winter strikes the best balance between comfort, health, and protecting your house from condensation damage.

Quick answer: Aim for 30-40% relative humidity indoors during a Metro Vancouver winter. Below 30% your skin, sinuses, and wood furniture tend to dry out; above 40-50%, our already-damp coastal climate pushes condensation onto cold windows and walls, which can lead to mould. A simple hygrometer from a hardware store will tell you where you actually stand.

Most building science and health guidance points to the same range for cold-climate homes: roughly 30% to 40% relative humidity (RH) in winter. Below that, indoor air feels dry - you'll notice more static shocks, dry skin, irritated sinuses, cracking in wood floors or furniture, and houseplants struggling. Above 40-45%, moisture starts condensing on the coldest surfaces in the house, which in a Vancouver winter usually means single-pane or older double-pane windows, exterior corners, and closets on outside walls.
Vancouver's climate makes this trickier than in a drier part of the country. Our outdoor air is already humid for much of the winter, and homes here often have less airtight construction and older windows than newer builds elsewhere in Canada. That means condensation and window fogging can show up at humidity levels that wouldn't cause problems in a drier city, so staying toward the lower half of the 30-40% range (say 30-35%) is often more realistic here than pushing toward 45%.

Many smart thermostats also display humidity, though a standalone hygrometer placed away from vents gives a more accurate room-level reading.
If you've got persistent condensation, a musty smell, or visible mould growth despite reasonable ventilation habits, it's worth having someone look at your whole-home moisture picture rather than just treating the symptom. This can involve checking whether your furnace or heat pump fan settings are helping or hurting air circulation, whether a whole-home humidifier or dehumidifier makes sense for your house, and whether your ventilation (including any HRV/ERV) is sized and working correctly.
