A heat pump that is running but not warming your Vancouver home is one of the most common service calls we get. Here are the 10 things we ask homeowners to check before we drive out — about half of these are DIY fixes that save you a service-call fee.

Free in-home consultation. Free written quote. TSBC-licensed installers. Call (604) 359-1081 or request a quote online.

1. Confirm the thermostat is set to HEAT, not COOL or AUTO

Sounds obvious — and yet it is the #1 false alarm. AUTO mode in shoulder season can leave the system in cool mode when you actually want heat. Switch to HEAT explicitly.

2. Check the air filter

A clogged filter restricts airflow and triggers an over-temperature safety lockout. Replace or wash. If the unit restarts after 10-20 minutes, this was the issue.

3. Verify the outdoor unit is running

Walk outside. Is the fan spinning? Are there any ice buildups blocking the coil? Listen for the compressor hum.

4. Look at the outdoor unit for ice

Ice buildup on the outdoor coil during heating is normal — defrost cycle clears it every 30-60 minutes. If ice is solid and growing, defrost is failing → call CANRO.

5. Check the breaker panel

Heat pump trips usually mean overcurrent, short-cycle, or a capacitor issue. Reset once. If it trips again immediately, stop and call.

6. Confirm backup heat is not stuck on

On a dual-fuel system, if the gas furnace is running but heat pump is not, the changeover balance point may be misconfigured. Easy CANRO adjustment.

7. Listen for compressor "trying" to start

Clicking sound followed by silence usually means start capacitor failure. Common, easy fix — call CANRO, $250-$400 parts and labour typical.

8. Check the disconnect switch

Outdoor unit has a service disconnect within 3 feet — confirm it is in the ON position. Squirrels and landscapers occasionally bump it.

9. Verify thermostat batteries (battery-powered models)

Low battery causes weird behaviours — backup-heat-only mode, false cool calls. Replace and re-program schedule.

10. Check for refrigerant smell

A faint chemical or "sweet" odour near the indoor unit may indicate a refrigerant leak — this is the one item where you stop troubleshooting and call us immediately.

Same-day diagnostic — what to expect

If the DIY checks do not solve it, CANRO offers same-day diagnostic in Metro Vancouver. Typical diagnostic fee $89-$129, applied against repair cost if you proceed.

Frequently asked questions

Frequently asked questions

Should I just leave it off and use space heaters?
Short term, yes. Long term: an idle heat pump in BC winter risks freeze damage to the condensate line.
How long can I wait before calling?
If house is below 18°C and you have no backup heat, call us immediately. Otherwise next-day works.
What if it heats sometimes but blows cold at others?
That is usually defrost cycle (normal) or low refrigerant charge (call). Note the times for diagnosis.
Is emergency heat the same as backup heat?
Yes — on Ecobee/Nest thermostats with heat pump, "emergency heat" forces gas furnace or electric resistance only.

Frequently asked questions

Is a heat pump worth it in Vancouver?
Yes. Vancouver's mild winters (average lows above -5°C) are ideal for cold-climate heat pumps. A properly sized modern heat pump can cover 100% of heating and cooling for most homes, cut heating bills by 30–60% versus electric baseboards or oil, and qualifies for combined BC Hydro, FortisBC and federal rebates.
What rebates are available for heat pumps in BC?
Review current Better Homes BC and utility program requirements for your property and equipment before installation. Amounts, application steps and permitted combinations vary. The Canada Greener Homes Grant and Loan are closed to new applications; previously approved applicants should follow their own file requirements.
Should I get a ducted heat pump or ductless mini-split?
If you already have ductwork from a furnace, a ducted central heat pump is usually the better choice for whole-home comfort. Ductless mini-splits are ideal for additions, suites, garage conversions, and homes without ducts (radiant heated houses).
How long does a heat pump last?
A modern heat pump installed by a qualified contractor typically lasts 15–20 years. Annual maintenance, regular filter changes and keeping the outdoor coil clear of leaves and debris all extend service life.
Do heat pumps work in cold weather?
Modern cold-climate heat pumps from Mitsubishi, Daikin, Carrier, Lennox and Bosch maintain rated capacity down to -15°C and continue producing heat (at reduced capacity) down to -25°C — far colder than Metro Vancouver ever gets.
