Quick answer: For most homes, a MERV 13 filter is the recommended target during wildfire smoke events. It captures a much higher share of the fine smoke particles that MERV 8-11 filters let through, while still being safe for most modern residential furnace blowers to pull air through, unlike MERV 16 or true HEPA media, which can choke airflow on systems not designed for it.

Why MERV 13 Is the Practical Target

Wildfire smoke is made up mostly of very fine particles, the same PM2.5 category that's linked to respiratory irritation. A standard MERV 8 filter, which is what a lot of Metro Vancouver furnaces run year-round, is designed to catch dust, lint, and pollen. It does very little for smoke particles that size. MERV 13 filters are rated to capture a much larger share of particles down in that fine range, which is why public health guidance during BC wildfire seasons generally points homeowners toward MERV 13 as the practical upgrade.

You don't need to jump to MERV 16 or a true HEPA filter to get meaningful protection. Those ratings filter even finer, but they're also much denser, and most residential furnace blowers weren't sized for that kind of resistance. MERV 13 is the point where you get a real jump in smoke filtration without automatically overloading the system.

Check Your Furnace Before You Upgrade

The catch with any higher-MERV filter is airflow. A furnace blower is designed to push air through a certain amount of resistance. Swap in a denser filter than the system was designed for and you can reduce airflow, make the blower work harder, and in some cases contribute to a cracked heat exchanger or short-cycling over time. Before switching to MERV 13, it's worth confirming your filter slot can accept the thicker media (many MERV 13 filters are 1-inch pleated and drop in the same slot as a MERV 8, but not always) and that your system isn't already struggling with airflow.

  • Check the filter housing size and depth — most MERV 13 filters come in the same 1-inch or 4-inch depths as standard filters, but confirm the fit
  • Listen for the blower working harder or the system running longer cycles after the swap
  • Replace the filter more often during smoke events — a MERV 13 filter loads up with fine particulate faster than a MERV 8 during heavy smoke
  • If your ductwork or furnace is older or already marginal on airflow, ask a technician before jumping straight to MERV 13

Other Ways to Improve Indoor Air During Smoke Events

A furnace filter only cleans air that's actually moving through the ductwork, so running the fan on continuous (not just when heating or cooling is calling) during a smoke event helps circulate and filter more of the air in the house. A portable HEPA air purifier in bedrooms or main living areas is a good complement, especially in rooms that are far from a return vent. Keeping windows and doors closed and sealing obvious gaps also matters more than people expect.

If you're not sure whether your system can safely handle MERV 13, or if you notice reduced airflow after switching, CANRO can take a look at your furnace and ductwork and recommend the right filtration for your specific setup. Call (604) 359-1081 for a diagnostic visit and a free written quote if any changes are needed.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a MERV 13 filter in any furnace?
Not always. Some older or smaller-capacity furnaces weren't designed for the added airflow resistance of a MERV 13 filter. Check your filter slot size and, if you're unsure, have a technician confirm your blower can handle it.
Is MERV 13 as good as a true HEPA filter?
No, HEPA filters capture a higher percentage of fine particles, but true HEPA media is too dense for most residential furnace blowers. MERV 13 is the best rating most home HVAC systems can run without airflow problems.
How often should I change a MERV 13 filter during smoke season?
More often than usual. Because it's catching more fine particulate, it can clog faster during heavy smoke days. Check it monthly during active wildfire smoke season and replace as needed.
Will a higher MERV filter reduce my furnace's airflow?
It can, especially on older systems. A properly sized MERV 13 filter usually works fine in furnaces built in the last 10-15 years, but if you notice weaker airflow or longer run times after switching, that's worth having checked.
Does running the furnace fan constantly help during wildfire smoke?
Yes. Setting the thermostat fan to 'on' instead of 'auto' keeps air continuously cycling through the filter, which improves overall filtration during a smoke event rather than only filtering when heating or cooling is running.
