Do UV Air Purifiers Actually Work With HVAC Systems?

UV lights installed in an HVAC system can reduce mould and bacteria growth on the coil and drain pan, but they are not a substitute for a good filter. Here's an honest look at what they do and don't do.

Quick answer: UV air purifiers can work, but only for specific jobs. A coil UV light kills mould, bacteria, and viruses that would otherwise grow on the wet evaporator coil and in the drain pan, which helps keep the coil clean and smells down. They do not trap dust, pollen, pet dander, or wildfire smoke particles, so they are a supplement to a good filter, not a replacement.

What UV lights in an HVAC system actually do

There are two common types of UV systems that get installed in ducted HVAC equipment, and they do different things. The most common and most useful is a coil light: a UV-C lamp mounted next to the evaporator coil (the cold coil your AC or heat pump air passes over). Because that coil is damp and dark, it is a natural spot for mould and bacteria to grow, which can cause musty smells and slowly clog the coil. A UV-C lamp aimed at the coil keeps that biological growth in check so the coil stays cleaner and the air passing over it doesn't pick up those odours.

The second type is an air-sterilization light, mounted in the ductwork to zap microbes as air moves past. These can inactivate some airborne bacteria and viruses, but the air only spends a fraction of a second in front of the lamp, so the real-world benefit is more modest than the marketing suggests. Both types share one important limit.

What UV lights do NOT do

This is the part homeowners most often get wrong. UV light is not a filter. It has no effect on the particles most people actually want gone from their air:

  • Dust, pollen, and pet dander — these are captured by your furnace filter, not UV.
  • Wildfire smoke particles — during BC smoke season, a good filter or dedicated air cleaner is what removes fine smoke, not a UV lamp.
  • Odours from cooking, smoke, or VOCs — those need carbon filtration or ventilation.
  • Mould already growing elsewhere in the home — UV only treats what its light directly reaches inside the equipment.

So if your goal is cleaner air overall, the biggest wins usually come first from a properly sized, good-quality filter and clean ductwork — with UV as a targeted add-on for coil hygiene.

When a UV light makes sense in a Metro Vancouver home

Our damp coastal climate means evaporator coils and drain pans stay moist for much of the year, which is exactly the condition mould likes. A coil UV light is a reasonable, worthwhile upgrade if you have had recurring musty smells from your vents, visible mould on the coil, or you or someone in the home is sensitive to mould. It is a smaller investment than replacing a coil and helps the equipment run cleaner over time.

It makes less sense if your real concern is dust, allergies, or wildfire smoke — in that case your money is better spent on filtration and air sealing. A UV bulb also isn't 'install and forget': the lamp loses output over time and typically needs replacing on a schedule to keep working.

Getting it installed and balanced correctly

UV lamps have to be positioned so the light actually hits the coil, and they need to be installed safely — UV-C is harmful to skin and eyes, so it should never be left exposed. This is worth having done by a technician who can check that your filter, airflow, and coil are all working together rather than just bolting on a light and calling it done. If you're not sure whether your air-quality complaint is a filter problem, a duct problem, or a coil problem, a diagnostic visit sorts that out before you spend on the wrong fix. CANRO offers a diagnostic visit and a free written quote — call (604) 359-1081 or email info@canroheat.ca.

Frequently asked questions

Will a UV air purifier help with wildfire smoke?
No. UV light does not trap smoke particles. For wildfire smoke you need good filtration — a high-quality filter your system can handle, or a dedicated air cleaner — not a UV lamp.
Do UV lights replace my furnace filter?
No. A filter captures dust, pollen, and dander; UV only controls mould and bacteria on the coil and in the air stream. You still need to change your filter on schedule.
Are HVAC UV lights safe?
Yes, when installed correctly inside sealed equipment where the UV-C light isn't exposed. UV-C can harm skin and eyes, so it should be installed and serviced by a technician, never left uncovered.
How often does the UV bulb need replacing?
UV-C lamps lose effectiveness over time even if they still glow, so most are replaced on a regular schedule — typically once a year or two depending on the product. Your technician can advise the interval for your specific lamp.
Is a UV light worth it for a Vancouver home?
It can be, mainly for coil and drain-pan mould control given our damp climate and recurring musty vent smells. If your concern is dust, allergies, or smoke instead, filtration is the better first investment.

Good to know

Frequently asked questions

Do I need air conditioning in Vancouver?
Vancouver summers have been getting hotter — the 2021 heat dome saw temperatures over 40°C. Most modern Vancouver homes now install a heat pump that provides both heating and cooling, replacing a furnace and avoiding the need for a separate A/C system.
How much does central A/C cost in Vancouver?
A typical 2.5–3 ton central air conditioner added to an existing forced-air furnace costs $5,500–$9,500 installed. A heat pump conversion (cooling + heating in one unit) is usually a smarter long-term investment given available rebates.
How often should A/C be serviced?
Annual servicing in spring keeps the outdoor coil clean, refrigerant charge correct, and the indoor evaporator coil and condensate drain clear. Skipping service is the single biggest cause of premature compressor failure.
